CAFF
’s Harvest of the Month Tasting Kits deliver farm fresh produce to school classrooms so teachers can take the lead on food and farming education, and kids can taste fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms.
How does it work? CAFF delivers a Harvest of the Month Tasting Kit featuring a differently locally grown produce item and standards linked teaching materials to your school each month.
A Harvest of the Month Tasting Kit includes:
• Enough fresh, locally-grown produce to taste with a class
• An educational packet that includes: recipes, a farm profile, a produce identification sheet, standards-linked in-class lessons for a range of ages, information about the produce such as growing methods, nutritional value and history to help teach about the featured produce, and a parent newsletter.
“After my class started the Harvest of the Month program, my students are excited about eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. The curriculum materials included in the Harvest of the Month Tasting Kits are broad enough in scope to be meaningful for a range of ages and grades, and are well researched, beautifully and professionally compiled. “ –Suzanne Laurens 2nd grade teacher, Lincoln School, Salinas, CA
How do I sign up?
This program currently serves the following counties in California: Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, San Mateo, and Santa Clara.
If your school in interested in participating you can fill out an application here, or contact us at harvestofthemonth@caff.org or (831) 582-5115 with questions. Download our flier for this year.
The Harvest of the Month Tasting Kits are $15 per kit each month. That’s only 50 cents per child for most classes. We require a ten kit minimum order per school site for delivery, with at least a three month commitment.
How can I pay for this? The kits provide ten months of engaging standards-based lessons and farm fresh produce for $150 per class each school year.
Fundraising ideas include:
• Asking the PTA/PTO to purchase kits
• Asking parents to sponsor a month during the school year
• Checking with your food service director or principal to see if your school qualified and received a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant
