SUMMARY:Growing a Revolution: Rebuilding Urban Soil
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday December 6th\, 2019 at Three Sisters Gardens as we dig deep into soil health and learn about how we can regenerate our soil while also healing our climate and nourishing our communities! This workshop will be led by local experts and will explore how we recover our soil from the years of neglect that have left them compacted and lacking essential nutrients. \nSpecific methods we’ll be discussing together include cover cropping and no-till agriculture along with some insight into how these methods help us to remove carbon from the atmosphere to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This workshop will also include an experiential component with a field demonstration at our site on Cummins Way in West Sacramento. \nFood is free and will be provided by Indigenous chef Melissa Yringuez\, of Baa Baa’s Kitchen. While the ingredients may not consist of Native foods\, we want to honor and acknowledge that the fight for food sovereignty is one that is ongoing and a movement that we will continue to help build. \nThis event is FREE and is intended to bring together underrepresented farmers including new farmers\, socially and economically disadvantagd farmers\, minority farmers\, veteran\, and urban farmers to participate in a discussion around sustainable agricultural practices.\n700 Cummins Way\, West Sacramento\, CA 95605cl\nPlease be aware that this event is happening in December and that could mean dry or wet weather and definitely cold weather\, so please dress for those circumstances. Should there be rain we have a backup indoor location we can utilize to keep us warm and dry. Recommended clothing:\nBoots or closed toe shoes\nPants\nJacket / Rain Jacket\nA hat or beenie \nFor questions\, please email:\ninfo@3sistersgardens.com \nRegister Here! \n  \nMADE POSSIBLE BY: \nWe Grow Urban Farm \nCommunity Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) \nSacramento Food Policy Council \nJohnny’s Selected Seeds \nPlanting Justice \nAmerican Farmland Trust

SUMMARY:Webinar: Small Farm Food Safety Questions De-Mystified
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard conflicting information on how the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) applies to small produce farmers? \nHas a buyer asked you to be “FSMA Compliant?” Have you heard conflicting information about food safety from different people? Join the CCOF Foundation and Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the Farmers Guild (CAFF/FG) for a webinar that goes over FSMA frequently asked questions for produce growers\, as well as clears up common myths and misconceptions about small farm food safety. \nOn-farm food safety is a complicated topic that many small farmers are left to understand on their own. With the start of FSMA inspections on the largest produce farms this year\, there’s lots of talk within the produce industry about food safety. Sometimes farmers hear or are told incorrect information. \nIn this webinar we will go through the top FSMA and small-farm food safety questions we hear from farmers and provide clear\, practical\, and correct answers. We will cover food safety topics including FSMA overview information\, postharvest handling\, personnel training\, and using manure as a soil amendment. \nAmple time will be reserved for questions from the audience. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nKali Feiereisel serves as CAFF and the FG’s Senior Manager for Farmer Services. She provides food safety technical assistance to farmers as they further develop their practices to meet new requirements. In addition to her background in organic farming\, Feiereisel studied food safety\, local food systems\, and food and agriculture policy while completing her graduate degree in public health nutrition from the University of California\, Berkeley. \nREGISTER HERE! \n### \nAbout Our Partners \nUSDA NIFA: This material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, under award number USDA-NIFA-FSMA-2018-70020-28869.
