SUMMARY:Science & the Transformation of Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Re-imagining Agriculture with Regenerative Principles and Independent\, Farmer-driven Research \nFeaturing Dr. Jonathan Lundgren\, Blue Dasher Farm & the Ecdysis Foundation \nIn an increasingly complex and inter-related world\, systemic challenges\, such as climate change\, can be daunting. Fortunately\, nature–itself a highly complex web of relationships–holds answers. Likewise\, farmers\, those who actually tend nature\, often develop valuable insights working within the complexity of agriculture. Cultivating a more resilient\, regenerative agriculture will require a deeper awareness of and appreciation for lessons of the “field” and those who work it. \nThis lecture will explore the role of cutting-edge science in addressing problems faced by farmers\, ranchers and bee keepers through applied ecological research\, guided citizen science\, innovative partnerships and peer-to-peer learning. \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Lundgren is an agroecologist and entomologist\, Director of the ECDYSIS Foundation\, and CEO for Blue Dasher Farm. Lundgren’s research and education programs focus on assessing the ecological risk of pest management strategies and developing long-term solutions for regenerative food systems. \nSuggested donation of $5 to $10 at the door. First come\, first serve. \nBrought you by Cal Poly Center for Sustainability \n### \nThis talk is a pre-conference special event leading up to the 32nd annual California Small Farm Conference. To learn more about the full conference\, taking place the following days\, Feb 28 & 29 in Paso Robles\, please visit http://www.casmallfarmconference.com

SUMMARY:Tour: Weighing Cover Cropping Options in Orchards
DESCRIPTION:Cover crops can be an effective way to address a variety of resource concerns that impact both environmental quality and tree health. They are one of the key ways to take advantage of the orchard floor and its potential to capture carbon and nutrients\, and reduce their excess loss to air and water. However\, the use of cover crops is associated with some management challenges\, especially in drought-prone California. The Cal Poly lemon orchard recently began a set of trials using drought tolerant cover crops and cover crop mixes as part of the 2019 CDFA Healthy Soils Program. Over the course of the project\, Dr. Charlotte Decock and the project team will be monitoring soil carbon content and greenhouse gas emissions\, as well as investigating the costs and tradeoffs associated with cover crop management. During the field day\, Dr. Decock\, Hilary Philips\, and Cal Poly students will use hands-on soil testing methods to demonstrate the links between cover crops and a suite of important soil properties. The Cal Poly team will facilitate a discussion of management strategies and considerations for incorporating cover crops into an orchard system\, and the possibility of combining cover crops with amendments such as mycorrhizal fungi or compost. Funding programs for these practices\, both from NRCS and CDFA\, will also be discussed. \nFEATURING:\nCharlotte Decock\, Soil Scientist\, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo\nHilary Phillips\, District Conservationist\, USDA-NRCS San Luis Obispo\nJohnny Rosecrans\, Crops Technician and Orchard Manager\, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo \nThis field day is a pre-conference special event leading up to the 32nd annual California Small Farm Conference. SUMMARY:Los Cinco Principios de la Salud Del Suelo

SUMMARY:Tour: Small Vineyard Practices for a Hotter\, Drier Climate
DESCRIPTION:Soil health principles lie at the core of management decisions that emphasize grape quality and long term resilience for small vineyards. These practices that aim to impart beneficial qualities to soil such as water holding capacity\, infiltration\, microbial activity\, fertility and erosion control are becoming increasingly important in the face of the unprecedented challenges associated with climate change. Tablas Creek Vineyard is a pioneering 120-acre estate vineyard that has been addressing these challenges head-on. As a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard\, they continue to refine ways to make the most of on-farm and local resources using innovative approaches to dry farming\, holistic grazing management and conservation tillage practices. As part of the Cal Poly Healthy Soils Project\, Tablas Creek has been participating in a three year project to investigate the links between soil building practices such as no-till and grazing of cover crops\, and measures of soil carbon\, water holding capacity and grape quality. During the field day\, Tablas Creek vineyard managers will share lessons learned from their unique soil management strategy\, Dr. Cristina Lazcano and her research team will present some of their preliminary findings\, and Dr. Jean-Pierre Wolff of Wolff Vineyards and others will discuss the variety of ways small vineyards are balancing soil\, water\, and quality considerations in anticipation of rising peak temperatures and shrinking water supplies. \n\nThis field day is a pre-conference special event leading up to the 32nd annual California Small Farm Conference. SUMMARY:Farming in the Age of Big Tech
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a forum and interactive conversation exploring the complex topic of Farming in the Age of Big Tech: The Digital Revolution\, Your Data & the Future of Family Farms. \nThis talk serves as the opening reception of the Small Farm Tech Expo\, which takes place the following day\, Monday the 9th\, which will focus more on practical tools and workshops for the small-scale farm. \nMechanization and the digital revolution has transformed our lives. Just as the “internet of things” has digitized everything from watches to refrigerators and mechanization has upended entire industries\, these technologies are also changing the face of agriculture. Mechanization continues to scale up\, consolidating the industry. Farm equipment is becoming increasingly digital and many new technologies collect massive amounts of data from farms and farmers\, which some say gives growers more precise control over their operations while others fear a loss of control. \nAs with other industries\, tough questions arise as these technologies zoom us into the future faster than our society can adapt. Join us to learn about the history of mechanization and more recent issues related to digital agriculture. Who owns the data collected by digital farming technologies? What kind of farming practices are encouraged by newer forms of mechanization and digital technologies? Who do these technologies leave behind? And do farmers have the right––and the abilities––to repair their digital equipment? \nAdmission will get you entry to either or both days\, Sunday evening’s Forum and/or Monday’s Expo (though no one will be turned away from the evening forum for lack of funds). Wine and other libations included. \nCome early\, between 3 and 5pm\, to check out the Expo Hall & tool display. \n$30 Admission\n$20 Student & New Farmer Discount \n \n### \nPRESENTERS: \nIldi Carlisle-Cummins is Executive Director of the California Institute for Rural Studies. She started the Cal Ag Roots Project\, a storytelling project that produces podcasts about the history of California farming. Ildi holds an M.S. in Community Development from UC Davis\, where she also worked as a researcher\, studying community food systems and California agriculture. \nLaura Mann is an Assistant Professor in the Dept of International Development and a research affiliate of the Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa. She is sociologist whose research focuses on the political economy of development\, knowledge and information and communication technologies in Africa. Before joining the LSE\, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute and at the African Studies Centre in Leiden. \nChris Bross was born in Wisconsin\, where his father worked for Allis-Chalmers\, one of the biggest manufacturers of agricultural tractors in the past century. His first job at 12 years old was working on a small local farm picking crops and going to sell at Saturday market. Now Chris manages strategic partnerships at iFixit\, creators of the free repair guide for everything\, written by everyone. iFixit is a founding member of repair.org\, leading the Right to Repair movement by authoring legislation to change state and international laws enabling the right for everyone to repair everything they own.

SUMMARY:Growing a Revolution: Rebuilding Urban Soil
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday December 6th\, 2019 at Three Sisters Gardens as we dig deep into soil health and learn about how we can regenerate our soil while also healing our climate and nourishing our communities! This workshop will be led by local experts and will explore how we recover our soil from the years of neglect that have left them compacted and lacking essential nutrients. \nSpecific methods we’ll be discussing together include cover cropping and no-till agriculture along with some insight into how these methods help us to remove carbon from the atmosphere to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This workshop will also include an experiential component with a field demonstration at our site on Cummins Way in West Sacramento. \nFood is free and will be provided by Indigenous chef Melissa Yringuez\, of Baa Baa’s Kitchen. While the ingredients may not consist of Native foods\, we want to honor and acknowledge that the fight for food sovereignty is one that is ongoing and a movement that we will continue to help build. \nThis event is FREE and is intended to bring together underrepresented farmers including new farmers\, socially and economically disadvantagd farmers\, minority farmers\, veteran\, and urban farmers to participate in a discussion around sustainable agricultural practices.\n700 Cummins Way\, West Sacramento\, CA 95605cl\nPlease be aware that this event is happening in December and that could mean dry or wet weather and definitely cold weather\, so please dress for those circumstances. SUMMARY:Webinar: Small Farm Food Safety Questions De-Mystified
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard conflicting information on how the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) applies to small produce farmers? \nHas a buyer asked you to be “FSMA Compliant?” Have you heard conflicting information about food safety from different people? Join the CCOF Foundation and Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the Farmers Guild (CAFF/FG) for a webinar that goes over FSMA frequently asked questions for produce growers\, as well as clears up common myths and misconceptions about small farm food safety. \nOn-farm food safety is a complicated topic that many small farmers are left to understand on their own. With the start of FSMA inspections on the largest produce farms this year\, there’s lots of talk within the produce industry about food safety. Sometimes farmers hear or are told incorrect information. \nIn this webinar we will go through the top FSMA and small-farm food safety questions we hear from farmers and provide clear\, practical\, and correct answers. We will cover food safety topics including FSMA overview information\, postharvest handling\, personnel training\, and using manure as a soil amendment. \nAmple time will be reserved for questions from the audience. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nKali Feiereisel serves as CAFF and the FG’s Senior Manager for Farmer Services. She provides food safety technical assistance to farmers as they further develop their practices to meet new requirements. In addition to her background in organic farming\, Feiereisel studied food safety\, local food systems\, and food and agriculture policy while completing her graduate degree in public health nutrition from the University of California\, Berkeley. \nREGISTER HERE! \n### \nAbout Our Partners \nUSDA NIFA: This material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, under award number USDA-NIFA-FSMA-2018-70020-28869.
