The Field Manager reports to the head farmer/owner and will work alongside 1-5 other team members.  The Field Manager is responsible for all production in the field and will be leading a small team and as well as working alone.  This is a full-time position, 5 days per week (40-45 hours). Working hours are 6:00am-2:30pm and will adjust with daylight hours. Our CSA season runs May through October. Farmer’s Market season runs October-April.

Working closely with the Owner, the Field Manager will help improve the processes, systems, soil, yields and bottom-line of the farm. We are looking for an energetic farmer athlete who has a passion for continual improvement and efficiency with a keen eye for quality. The ideal candidate will have two full seasons of experience. Highly desired is one season in a field management and supervisory role. We encourage candidates who are interested but may not have the desired experience to apply – we will train the right person.

Job Duties:

  • Comfortable both managing a field crew and working independently to efficiently complete tasks.
  • Experience with and desire to manage and supervise employees and day laborers.
  • Keen eye for continual improvement, both as a manger and in production systems streamlining
  • Assist in crop planning for CSA, farmers market, restaurants and wholesale channels
  • Assist in organic certification process
  • Seeding and nursery management
  • Ability to take initiative, be self motivated, and perform in a fast paced work environment.
  • Sets an example of hard work and commitment; displays a sense of enthusiasm and appropriate urgency; uses his/her time effectively and efficiently; prioritizes tasks and focuses time accordingly.
  • Well honed interpersonal skills, with the ability to both follow direction and communicate respectfully and effectively in diverse environments
  • Knowledge of Soil Health and Improvement Practices
  • Solid understanding of small scale vegetable production, including greenhouse and field activities, weed management, harvest, and post-harvest practices
  • BCS Tractor experience is highly preferred. Field Manager will be trained and will use the BCS Tractor extensively in their role, and will train the field crew on safe operation.
  • Working in low to no-till beds with understanding of physical aspects of small scale farming by hand and with 2-wheel tractor
  • Efficient Harvesting techniques – continually improving methods and training crew on efficiency and quality
  • Troubleshooting Disease and Pest Management
  • Washing and Packing techniques, including knowledge of FSMA
  • Flower Bouquet arranging
  • Weed cultivation
  • Flipping and preparing new vegetable and flower beds
  • Transplanting seedlings
  • Seeding
  • Pest management
  • Good customer service skills, including Farmer’s Market Experience and interacting with chef and restaurant owners
  • Wednesday Delivery Driving rotates with crew. Must be comfortable with San Francisco and Oakland city driving. Long distance driving to the Peninsula
  • Work the Sunday Farmer’s Market in rotation with crew
