Farm Intern

Rough Patch Farm

Rough Patch Farm is currently accepting applications for interns for Summer 2024. This is a small, sustainable farm producing primarily cut flowers and oil olives.  We recently relocated from Sacramento County to Diamond Springs, El Dorado County.  Michael, the head farmer, has a background in higher education as well as agriculture, so this may be an optimal position for students or those on a gap year, although anyone at any age with a sincere interest in farming is encouraged to apply.  Those with an interest in sustainability or floral design, or a background in FFA or 4H are also welcome.

Upcoming projects include greenhouse construction, growing and harvesting summer flowers (sunflower, lisianthus, strawflower, zinnias, scabiosas, dahlias, liatris, you name it!), Gerber daisy production, olive pruning, planting perennial flower and foliage crops, and building farm infrastructure including fencing and animal shelter.  Marketing products is another major job, including floral and olive oil crops, and farm equipment maintenance and repair is always ongoing.

Interns must commit to a minimum of 8 hours per week, but the schedule is flexible to meet individual needs (paid work, school, etc.)  The intern’s work schedule will include a mix of educational activities and general farm work, but can be tailored to fit the individual’s interests and goals.  In addition, part of the internship can be remote, with a project focused on marketing/sales, social media, or a similar part of the farm business.

To apply, send a brief (1-2 paragraph) statement describing your interests and background to michael@roughpatchfarm.com.  Indicate a specific goal or area of interest.  A resume is optional if you have one.  Applications are considered on a rolling basis, but interns are encouraged to start the process 1-2 months prior to their desired start date.  This is an unpaid internship, and unfortunately we are not able to offer intern housing at this time.  Feel free to email with any questions.
