Farm intern

Summerfield Waldorf School and Farm is a small-diversified Biodynamic farm modeled after a family farm that was once common in this area. We have been Demeter certified since 2002. The farm occupies roughly half of the 32 acre Summerfield Waldorf School campus. We are situated close to the Laguna de Santa Rosa wetlands in an area that was once a large oak savannah. We are currently growing 2 acres of row crops on semi-permanent raised beds. Our primary tillage is done by tractor. We have 8 acres of pasture for cows, and sheep. We also have chickens and ducks. Students, pre-k through twelfth grade have gardening classes on the farm and help with planting, seeding and harvesting. Crops include beets, carrots, kale, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, chard, onions, garlic, leeks, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, and squash. We have a small orchard with 80 heirloom apple trees, plums and pears. We harvest everyday and sell vegetables, and meat through our onsite farm stand.

Internship Details:
Interns will be working along side the farmer, with volunteers and on their own. Chores and responsibilities will include milking, planting, weeding, harvesting, mowing, tractor fieldwork, feeding, fencing, and general day to day farming. Because of the proximity of the school, there is a strong emphasis of cleanliness and organization. Each apprentice will have two days off a week.

Educational Opportunities: Interns will learn about crop rotations, compost making, fertility management, green house management, native plants, insectary hedgerows, plant propagation, tractor and machinery repair, animal husbandry, irrigation (drip and overhead) repair, and farm stand management. As well as ample time to work with classes and learn about garden classes

Skills Desired: Must have at least 1 year farm experience

Meals: Meals are not included but all food (fruit, vegetables, and meat) we grow is available.

Stipend: Stipend is $1000 per month paid bi-monthly. There is a possibility to stay on a second year with raise

Housing: Intern housing consists of a shared kitchen and bathroom. Each intern will have a private yurt.
