The Farm Assistant will work under the Farm Manager for a full growing season. Tasks will include plant propagation, sowing/ transplanting, irrigation maintenance, mowing, fertility management, composting, weeding, pest management, harvesting, postharvest handling (washing, packaging and storage of crops) and marketing a variety of crops. Farm Assistant will learn the basic systems and skills needed for row cropping on a small scale diversified farm, as well as many gardening and landscaping skills. In addition, this position will play a key role in helping harvest and prepare crops for sale through a farmers’ market stand. Regular participation in staffing the farmers market on Saturdays is required and will be determined at the time of hire. They will be expected to assist in keeping the farm and the outdoor classroom clean and safe, and support the development of other educational infrastructure at the farm. The Farm Assistant will help to guide volunteers and community members. Curiosity, flexibility, and enthusiasm are highly encouraged in this key support role.
Must be physically fit and able to: lift and move 50 pounds safely; stand for extended duration up to 6 hours; walk for up to 1.5 hours and up to 1 mile; read 12 point font and see people for distances up to 300 feet; communicate clearly; walk/run/jog on uneven surfaces and navigate a 30 degree slope (Surfaces include but are not limited to grass, gravel, wet and dry surfaces, uneven and/or rocky soil); be able to kneel, bend and sit for extended periods of time. Applicant must pass a live scan background check and a TB test. Good attitudes and enthusiasm are valued over experience! No formal farming experience is required for this role, although we may be able to offer a higher wage for a candidate with at least a full season of experience.
Due to the part time and seasonal nature of this position, this job is most appropriate for local applicants. No public transport is available to our farm site.
