CAFF is a California-based membership organization that includes family farmers and other community members passionate about local food, farming, and the environment.  As a farmer-serving organization, we recognize the historic and lasting inequities in the California food and farming system. We believe farmers of color, and other historically oppressed people, should have the opportunity to create and participate in a food and agriculture system that aligns with their needs, values, identities, knowledge systems, and communities. We commit to advancing racial, gender, and environmental justice in our larger systems, as well as in our own workplace. Currently, our programming is focused in four areas: Farm to Market, Policy & Advocacy, Farmer Services, and Ecological Farming.  To learn more about CAFF, our history, and our core values, visit https://www.caff.org/about.

Contract Summary

CAFF is seeking a Project Manager with a passion for farms, local food, and community collaboration. The Local Food Campaign Project Manager (Contractor) will spend two years launching a brand new marketing effort aimed at building a more localized and equitable food economy in the San Joaquin Valley while raising awareness around healthy, farm-fresh eating.

This project is housed within the larger Fresno-Merced Future of Food Innovation (F3) initiative, currently underway, which is designed to build a more resilient and sustainable food system for the region while accelerating new technology and skills into local agriculture. The primary deliverable of this particular project is to develop the regional identity, build awareness/participation and generate demand within the San Joaquin Valley for locally produced and made foods, reaching at least 1 million residents in the five-county area through a series of strategic events and campaigns.

The Contractor, together with CAFF’s Director of Membership & Communications, will co-supervise a Project Coordinator who will provide overall administrative support for this project. They will also collaborate with independent consultants tasked with community and stakeholder engagement in the region during the development of this project.

The Contractor will oversee a significant budget to hire and coordinate with a professional marketing firm for research, development, and execution of this new campaign. Three keys to the success of this project will be that 1) the local community feels a sense of ownership of this campaign, 2) the campaign is positioned in such a way that it will live on, in some form or another, well beyond the life of this grant and contract, and 3) that it reflects a multicultural, shared regional identity that cultivates new local markets for small-scale, Spanish-speaking and BIPOC producers in particular.

Lastly, as part of larger F3 initiative, the Contractor will work closely with other partners to integrate the local food campaign into the other efforts that comprise the regional initiative.

A successful candidate will be creative, self-motivated, collaborative, well organized, outgoing, and have demonstrated success in communications, marketing, and/or project management. Their work will be guided and informed by values and justice and equity. They will implement CAFF’s Racial Equity goals and practices throughout their work.

This position can be remote or based in the Fresno Region (shared office space available), though either way occasional travel to the region will be required in order to build trusted relationships and solid community rapport.
