Tech billionaires are trying to force a last-minute proposal through the California Legislature. The so-called “California Forever” project threatens farms and farmers that have operated in the golden hills of Solano County for over 100 years. And it’s a dangerous precedent for the entire state. 

CAFF continues to work with farmers who raise sheep, winegrapes, barley, and wheat in the area while developers secretly gobbled up 78 square miles of land around them. As the intentions of California Forever became clearer, farmers throughout the county pushed back and encouraged the investors to build inside existing cities. County residents and local elected officials have rejected the flawed proposed developments time and time again. So now they are turning their attention to Gov. Newsom and the state legislature, hoping they’ll undermine the county’s orderly growth initiative, a dangerous precedent for other initiatives across the state like Alameda, Napa, Stanislaus, Ventura and others. 

The most recent proposal — only floated in the final few days of the California legislative session — focuses on construction of a new shipbuilding yard, with no actual tenant, and appears to open the door for fast-tracking other future development efforts, such as data centers or battery plants. Solano County’s board of supervisors voted against the rushed and flawed proposal earlier this week.
