A look back at our Yolo County Groundwater Workshop!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Yolo County Groundwater Workshop earlier this month! It was a great opportunity to hear valuable updates, listen to stories from local farmers, and explore practical ideas for sustaining our groundwater resources. Here’s a quick photo recap:

Highlight - Kristin Sicke of Yolo Subbasin Groundwater Agency reviewed timely updates on well permitting, recharge projects, Yolo County Focus Areas, and groundwater conditions.
Annie Main of Good Humus Produce shows how perennial acreage in Hungry Hollow has increased to 67%. Main also shared the story of her family’s farm, details of affected wells in the area, and the need for community organizing.

Judith Redmond of Full Belly Farm and Lan Ngo of CAFF’s Water Policy team shared resources such as the Farmer Friendly Guide to Understanding the Yolo Subbasin Groundwater Sustainability Plan.

Local farmers and community members engaged in thoughtful discussions about their relationship with groundwater.
The audience included farmers and community members from the Capay Valley, Hungry Hollow and other parts of Yolo County.
Kristin Sicke, Yolo YSGA, fields audience questions about recharge initiatives.
Rich Collins of the Collins Farm reflects on land stewardship with quotes from Aldo Leopold and ideas for planting cover crops in furrows to support groundwater infiltration.

Not pictured, but just as valuable:

Conor Higgins from Yolo RCD provided guidance on irrigation systems. For a free consultation from the Mobile Irrigation Lab, reach out to Conor at higgins@yolorcd.org or (530) 661-1688 ext. 4 (English and Spanish available).

Maryse Suppiger of Dudek distributed information about free well and groundwater technical support.

Barbara Gemmill-Herren spoke on behalf of the Cache Creek Watershed Stewardship Group.

We’re grateful to all the speakers, organizers, and attendees who made this workshop a meaningful step forward for our region’s groundwater sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates and learn more about upcoming events here.
