Rizpah Bellard: Cultivating Change Through Agriculture and Advocacy

Meet Rizpah Bellard: a trailblazer in the realm of agriculture, social justice, and entrepreneurship. With a background steeped in the traditions of a Black Angus cattle ranch and enriched by academic pursuits at Cornell University and The University of Denver, Rizpah has become a formidable force in bridging the gap between society and nature.

In the heart of Northern California’s Guinda, amidst the serene landscapes of the Capay Valley, Rizpah’s journey began. Raised on a Black Angus cattle ranch, Rizpah’s childhood was infused with the rhythm of nature and the resilience of her ancestors. Her parents, hailing from urban environments yet rooted in agricultural traditions from Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, made a bold decision to nurture their family amidst the rugged beauty of the ranching life.

Rizpah’s upbringing was far from ordinary. In the embrace of nature’s bounty, she learned the intricacies of ranching, from tending to livestock to understanding the delicate balance of ecosystems. Her father’s legacy loomed large, paving the way for her as a second-generation rancher. With his guidance and unwavering support, Rizpah found herself navigating the sometimes rocky terrain of entrepreneurship and agriculture with a steady hand.

Transitioning from the idyllic ranch life to the bustling corridors of Fresno, Rizpah embarked on a mission to carve her niche in the agricultural landscape. Armed with a vision and fueled by her passion for both agriculture and social justice, she founded Nova Farming—a testament to her commitment to bridging the gap between society and nature.

For Rizpah, agriculture isn’t just a livelihood; it’s a platform for change. Through Nova Farming, she endeavors to educate and empower communities, especially those underserved and marginalized, about the vital connection between humanity and its food sources. Her work extends beyond the borders of her homeland, reaching as far as Changchun, China, Cali, Colombia, and Akure, Nigeria, where she currently lends her expertise to farmers and ranchers.

However, Rizpah’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. As a Black woman navigating the predominantly white and male-dominated realm of agriculture, she’s faced systemic barriers and institutional discrimination. From securing loans to accessing resources, she’s had to navigate a landscape where the odds are often stacked against her. Yet, she persists, undeterred by the hurdles, fueled by her determination to effect meaningful change.

At the core of Rizpah’s mission is a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of agriculture. Through Nova Farming, she seeks to redefine the narrative surrounding agriculture, moving beyond corporate giants to embrace the diversity and resilience of small-scale farming and community-driven initiatives. Her work isn’t just about raising herds of animals; it’s about growing people—nurturing a generation of changemakers who are deeply connected to nature and committed to building a more sustainable future.

As Rizpah remains steadfast in her commitment to her roots and her vision for a more just and equitable world. With each hoofprint in the soil and each seed planted, she’s sowing the seeds of change, one harvest at a time. Rizpah Bellard isn’t just a rancher; she’s a visionary, a trailblazer for a brighter, more inclusive future in agriculture.
