4th Annual Small Farm Tech Expo: Empowering Small-Scale Farmers with Innovation

The Small Farm Tech Expo once again delivered an engaging and transformative event, bringing together innovators, researchers, and farmers to explore technology solutions tailored specifically for small-scale farming.

Event Highlights

Exhibition Hall

The heart of the expo was the exhibition hall, where attendees explored groundbreaking technology and solutions designed to address the challenges faced by small-scale farmers. Some standout exhibitors included Renewables Inc, Sutton Ag, Parabug, Farm-ng, Gather.ag, Fresno State CENID Lab, among others.

Visitors had the chance to interact directly with technology developers and observe live demonstrations.

Workshops

The Expo also emphasized education and skill-building through a series of workshops tailored to meet the diverse needs of the farming community:

Taller de TecnologĂa 101: A workshop presented entirely in Spanish by CAFF and Kitchen Table Advisors. This session was specifically designed to bridge the technology gap for Spanish-speaking farmers, offering a welcoming space to explore how mobile apps can enhance farm operations.

Ag Equipment Funding Opportunities: Led by CARB and CalSTART, this session covered multiple financial incentives available to farmers to adopt new, low-emission farm equipment.

Business Development: Conducted by the Small Business Administration (SBA), this workshop provided farmers with essential tools to enhance their business operations and improve their marketing strategies.

Opportunities for farmers

The announcement of the 5th Small Farm Innovation Challenge set the stage for encouraging farmers to showcase their own groundbreaking ideas. This initiative highlights the Expo’s commitment to empowering farmers as active creators of technology, ensuring that the solutions developed address their practical, day-to-day challenges.

The presentation featured Farmer Dave, the winner of the first Innovation Challenge, whose story left a lasting impression on attendees. Farmer Dave shared his journey of creating the Farmhand Tractor, a compact and versatile tractor platform tailored to the needs of small-scale farms. His innovation demonstrated the transformative power of farmer-led ideas and inspired others to think creatively about their own challenges and solutions.

Another major highlight was the introduction of the Small Farms Alliance to Develop Appropriate Technology (SF-ADAPT). This initiative aims to foster collaboration between farmers, researchers, and technology providers to co-create tools and solutions that address the specific challenges faced by small-scale farms. SF-ADAPT ensures that technological advancements are not only accessible but also practical, impactful, and tailored to the realities of smaller operations.
