Small Farm Tech Expo 2024

On March 1st, 2024, CAFF hosted the much-anticipated Small Farm Tech Expo at Madera Community College. Amidst a steady downpour, our annual Expo still had a great turn out and the day brimmed with innovation, camaraderie, and the spirit of progress as we gathered to celebrate the resilience and ingenuity of our small-scale farmers.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the Innovation Challenge, a competition where visionaries from all walks of life converged to propose tech-based solutions aimed at empowering small-scale agriculture. From groundbreaking concepts to ingenious tweaks, every idea showcased the unwavering commitment to help our farmers not just survive, but thrive in an ever-evolving landscape. During the Tech Expo, we awarded our top 3 Innovation Challenge winners and also gave a handful of honorable mentions. We expanded on this year’s Challenge winners on our previous blog post.

Our panel discussions delved deep into the world of farm management software, featuring insightful conversations led by industry pioneers from LiteFarm, Tend, and FarmOS. Moderated by the dynamic duo of Amber Subers (OurSci) and Josh Volk (Slow Farm Hand), these sessions provided invaluable insights into leveraging technology for sustainable farming practices and also received a great amount of feedback from farmers on their biggest and most pressing challenges with technology.

Another poignant discussion centered around the journey towards organic farming, with panelists Donald Sherman, Angelica Bugarin and Javier Cruz sharing their experiences and wisdom. Guided by moderators Grace Perry and Jennifer Nunez, the dialogue underscored the importance of transitioning into organic practices and the profound impact it can have on both farmers and consumers.

In addition to the enriching discussions and showcases, attendees were treated to a variety of activities aimed at nourishing both the mind and body. A book raffle offered a chance for farmers to expand their knowledge and explore new ideas, while a free yoga class provided a much-needed opportunity to decompress from the stresses of farm life.

The event culminated in closing remarks by Tom Willey, whose captivating stories from his career as a farmer left the audience inspired and invigorated. His anecdotes not only celebrated the triumphs of small-scale agriculture but also underscored the importance of perseverance and passion in pursuing a career in farming.
